Captain of the Algerian national team, Carl Medjani said the Foxes are only down in the race to the Russia 2018 World Cup, but cannot be ruled out yet.
The midfielder who plays for Spanish club, CD Leganes said Saturday night in Uyo after they suffered a 3-1 defeat to the Super Eagles that the Foxes would do everything possible to bounce back, even as he added that they knew from day one that a group that has Nigeria and Cameroon was going to be a difficult one.
“We are in a very difficult group. Nigeria and Cameroon are very strong in African football and being in the same group with them makes things difficult. As things stand now, with one point from two matches, it is tight for us, but we are definitely not out. Our target now would be to beat Zambia home and away next year. If we do that and win the other two games without dropping a point, then we can still qualify. Until we finish with Zambia we won’t give up,” he said.
The player stressed that their biggest undoing in the race was not starting the qualifiers on a good note in the game against Cameroon at home.
“If we had beaten Cameroon at home, losing in Nigeria wouldn’t have been a problem.”
He added that the draw Cameroon played out with Zambia in Limbe showed that anything can still happen in the group.
“Cameroon also failed to win at home, so for us we are not going to give up. We would fight like wounded lions to beat Zambia home and away as that is the results we need to bounce back.”
