The Wesley University, Ondo, a faith-based institution owned by the Methodist Church, Nigeria, recently conferred honorary awards on some prominent Nigerians.

Over the years, the university has strived to take the school to greater heights by renovating some dilapidated structures, purchasing new vehicles, raising the standard of the library and so on. Realizing that the school could not depend on the church or government alone to ensure its financial self-sufficiency, the university had taken steps to seek financial autonomy by implementing programmes that will affect the school positively.

At the just concluded 9th and 10th convocations, the university bestowed honorary awards to deserving supporters of the school with various categories of awards of excellence.

The awardees had in one way or the other assisted the university through their philanthropy. The school management said the honours would compel them to do more for the institution when the need arises.

The event attracted people from all walks of life, including the Visitor to the university, His Eminence, Dr. Samuel Chukwuemeka Kanu Uche, Prelate, Methodist Church, Nigeria.

The awardees included Sir Asuquo Inuikim Obon, honoured with Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa), His Eminence, Dr. Samuel Uche Kanu, honored as Grand Fellow of Wesley University, while Dame Apenu Eucharia Torka was honoured with Doctor of Management (Honoris Causa), among other awardees.

The event, which took place at High Chief Olabanji Akiingbule Lecture Theatre at the university’s take-off site, witnessed the graduation of 166 students who were awarded various degrees and prizes for the 2019/2020 and 2021/2022 combined convocation.

Conferring the award on Dr. Inuikim, the chancellor of the university, Dr. Paul Enenche, represented by the vice-chancellor, Prof. Obeka Samuel, said Sir Inuikim was awarded Doctor of Science, ‘in recognition of his contributions to humanity within and outside Africa, also his commitment to university education and Wesley University in particular.

Prof. Samuel described Inuikim as a visionary and gifted in the areas of humanitarian services, engineering, leadership, human organization and development and an expert in conflict resolution.

In his remarks, an elated Dr. Inuikim, said he appreciated the authorities of Wesley University for the recognition bestowed on him, adding that he was pleased that his services and contributions to humanity were valued.

Other categories of awards at the ceremonies included: Prestigious Peace Leadership award of Wesley presented to the President, Democratic Republic of Congo, His Excellency, Felix Tshisekedi, Prestigious Wesley Heritage award, presented to Prelates emeritus, Dr. Sunday Mbang and Dr. Sunday Makinde, amongst others.
