Influenced by the late music icons, Bob Marley and Tupac Shakur, Gerald Ojukwu also known as Sleek Silk, dreamt big. He actually wanted to be a superstar like his heroes. In this chat, he talks about his career, influences and new single, Kiss Me, produced by 2shy among other issues.

How did you come into music?

I have been in music for a long time. It all began

during my childhood. I have been organising music concerts in the eastern part of Nigeria from way back. We used to have shows in clubs, open places and we also handled big events. That was how I came into music, and along the line, I started producing my own tracks and I came up with Mr Silk as my stage name because I was playing an important role at Silk Entertainment; I was like their front man.

Who are your influences?

Growing up, I was influenced by the late Tupac Shakur, Bob Marley and Lucky Dube. I loved their songs because of their messages, through which they fought for the poor masses.

What has been your greatest challenge?

My greatest challenge has been marketers. Most of them will feed fat from your sweats, but in order for you to ‘blow’ you need them and it is so sad. The only way out is to work hard and spend wisely. Perseverance is key so don’t quit but work tirelessly until you are there. Be unique in your sound and style.

How many songs have you recorded to date?

I have recorded about 20 songs since I started. My repertoire includes songs like Sweet Tomatoes, Kiss Me, Chika Odinaka (In God’s Hand), Alcohol, Jayee remix, Memories and so many others. But right now, I am working on a video for my latest track, which is Kiss Me.

What has been your happiest moment so far?

My happiest moment ever was the day I joined one of the biggest entertainment platforms in the South East. That was in 2015. I was surprised to be playing a major role, which I am doing till date as their front man, organising shows and appearing in some magazines.

How do you get inspiration?

My inspiration comes from what is happening in society. Sometimes it could be what’s happening in my life, places I have been to, including good and bad experiences.

So, when are you dropping your debut album?

Right now, we will be releasing more of singles. An album will come later, but for now, we are working on building a firm fan base. Once we achieve that, and we are already getting there, it would be time for an album. So, my fans should watch out.

What are your dreams?

My dream is that, one day, I will be celebrated for my efforts and hard work.
