AS part of packages to mark this year’s Workers’ Day celebration, Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi has given a special waiver for the promotion of all retiring and retired civil servants in the state.

The workers had, during the May Day celebration rally held in the state township stadium expressed their displeasure over the failure of the state government to release the results of 2015 promotion exercise even when that of 2016 was long overdue.

“Your Excellency, you would recall that the overwhelming support of the civil/public servants of Ebonyi, you were promoted from deputy governor to executive governor in May 2015. Since then, we have been looking forward to our members’ who deserved promotions which fell due in January 2015 but to no avail,” workers stated.

But the governor, who was represented at the occasion by his deputy, Dr. Eric Kelechi Igwe after being detailed on the outcome of the workers’ rally, quickly called for a closed-door meeting with the leadership of NLC and TUC in his office yesterday where he granted a waiver for the promotion.

It was learned that the retired civil servants to benefits are those who were supposed to be promoted in 2015 but were not promoted till they retired. In a joint briefing of the state government and the Labour Union after the closed door meeting, the Head of Service, Dr. Chamberlain Nwele said the governor graciously approved the promotion so that all concerned could process their retirement benefits.
