In its effort to support child education, the World Bank has announced the donation of $12 million to Jigawa State for improvement of girl-child education in the state for the period of four years.
The representative of World Bank, Dr Tunde Adepola announced the donation during the formal launch of the bank’s supported global partnership for education (GPE) held yesterday in Dutse Jigawa state.
He said the effort was in view of a collaboration with Jigawa State global partnership for education to support and augment government’s effort and desire towards achieving improved system of education.
Dr. Adepola urged the state government to make good use of funds meant for educational purposes.
In his speech, Governor Muhammadu Abubakar of the state commended World Bank for the support and partnership with the state government.
According to the governor, Jigawa State global partnership for education has resolved to work with all the donor agencies as well as make efforts in paying its counter part funding in order to improve the educational standard in the state.
Badaru said the back log of money on WAEC and those in tertiary levels amounting to 1.2 billion had been paid. Adding that NGOs such as ESSPIN and others are supporting the school-based programmes being carried out in the state.
In view of this, the governor said N1.5 billion gotten through partnership with donor agencies had already been deposited in the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) to be used on what it was meant for. “I assure you that the money given through intervention will be utilised judiciously.”
The governor further announced that his foundation, “Talhamis Foundation” was going to support education in the state by erecting some structures of classrooms.
However, the private sector has been called upon to also come to the aid of schools that were dilapidated and not fit for learning, especially during this rainy season.
