As part of the World Food Day celebrations, the Lions Clubs International, District 404 A1 Nigeria, recently flagged off its Feeding The Hungry Service Project at Oko Baba, Lagos, with the feeding of members of Oko Baba Destitute Centre, Ebute Meta, Lagos.
Speaking at the event, District Governor, Anogwi Anyanwu said: “Food is a necessity of life. We live in a world of plenty where many go to bed on empty stomachs. We call the attention of the world to the fact that hunger is a consequence of inequitable distribution of resources occasioned by greed and wastefulness. We assert that there is enough for everyone’s need but there is not enough for everyone’s greed.
“Let us give a thought to needs of the less privileged. Let us be less wasteful of resources. Let us give a thought to the millions of people who go to bed hungry everyday. Let us share what we have with those who do not have.
“This is the beginning of our Hunger Alleviation Service Project. We promise to continue to intervene in meeting the needs of our communities.”
Earlier in her welcome address, District Chairperson for Feeding the Hungry Committee, Lion Omotunde Johnson said: “It is very certain that Lions Club cannot feed all the hungry people in the communities. Still, we shall continue to do our best as soldiers of service and also hope that other well-meaning individuals and corporate organisations either do something on their own or partner with us to extend the reach. To this end, I wish to acknowledge and appreciate Julian’s Investment and Estate Company Limited, for the sponsorship of today’s event.”
The district later donated food, clothing and other items to members of the centre.
