Ex-coordinator general, Edo Civil Society Organizations (EDOCSO), Omobude Agho, yesterday, expressed concern over the way those at the helms of affairs continue to disregard human rights in the country, thereby putting it in a bad light in the comity of nation.

He expressed his concern during a rally in Benin City to mark the 2021World Human Rights Day celebration titled “Equality: Reducing inequalities, advancing human rights”.

Omobude said there is room for improvements despite being ranked low in the human rights index if citizens begin to do the right thing and shun human rights abuses.

Speaking also, Osadolor Ochei, interim chairman (EdoCSO), urged Nigerians to acquaint themselves with Nigeria’s constitution and the freedom of information law in order to hold the government to account.

Ochei added that the issue of inequality should not be allowed to triumph or dwell in the society.

Speaking on the theme, Olumide Dosumu, Edo State coordinator, National Human Rights Commission, said though inequalities cannot be totally eliminated but in the process of advancing human rights, inequality should be reduced so as to check discrimination in the society.

Dosumu said poverty is one of the factors that engenders inequality, urging the government to make concerted efforts to reduce the level of poverty in the society with a view to decreasing the menace of inequality.

“Several processes are involved to address inequality. We are all born human and equal, and that is why we adding our voices to this rally. If you take your mind back to 1999, you will notice that we have been progressing in terms of human rights,”he said.
