A Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Save the Children International (SCI), has celebrated members of the humanitarian community who sacrifice their time, comfort and lives to help humanity in Yobe.

Mr Mark Umaru, the SCI Field Manager, Yobe, at an event to mark the 2022 WOrld Humanitarian Day, said the day was set side to celebrate and honour individuals who engaged in humanitarian works.

He said that the World Humanitarian Day 2022 with theme: “‘It takes a village”, was also marked to celebrate the contribution of humanitarian volunteers who worked relentlessly for the cause of humanity.

According to him, humanitarian aid workers provide life-saving assistance to people who are suffering all over the world.

“Here with us today, we have the humanitarian communities which consist of International Organisations, UN agencies, National NGOs, Civil Society Oeganisatios, and government officials among others.”

Mr Cleobas James, the SCI Education Coordinator in Yobe, said the day was also used to pay tribute to the thousands of humanitarian workers who gave their lives and suffered injuries in the course of their work.

In her comments, Miss Hadiza Yusuf, SCI Livelihood Coordinator, Yobe said the point of humanitarian aid was to alleviate people’s suffering and maintain human dignity.

She urged people to show concern and help others.

“Try volunteering at a homeless shelter, a nursing home, a hospital or a place that serves underprivileged children around you,” she said.
