Chairman and founder of the most magnificent golf course in the West African subregion, the Smokin Hills Golf Resort in Ilara Mokin, Ondo Stste, Chief Michael Ade.Ojo has promised that the next edition of Elizabeth Wuraola Adeojo Memorial Golf Tournament would be
something the golfers will marvel at.
Speaking at the gala night climaxing this year’s 14th edition of the tournament, Chief Ade.Ojo an avid golf pundit took time out to extol the virtues of his late wife who passed on 14 years ago and also spoke of his plans to make Ilara Mokin and indeed, Ondo State so endearing to visitors at first visit in the 15th edition of the tournament.
“ Life is not worth living if one does not have anything to be remembered for. The woman in whose honour this tournament is organised was everything a woman wants to be. Beyond being a wife, she was a dutiful mother to her children and a compassionate boss to her colleagues. She was the silent force behind various successes of the Group and a mentor to her colleagues. Great lives like hers never go out, they go on. Notwithstanding her departure, the family has continued to stand in unity, ” he said.
Continuing, he said, “I want to appreciate everyone that has come here to honour this yearly tournament and by the special grace of the Almighty God, golfers coming here next year will be accommodated within the confine of the Golf Resort. A new Five Star Hotel complete with swimming pools will provide accommodation to golfers coming here next year to play in this new 18 hole championship golf course. This hotel with amusement park will remain true to its African origins with the overall design and interiors being based on local Nigerian art and traditional architecture”.
Also speaking, Olaniyi Agere hailed the organizers saying, “ Thanks to Chief Ade.Ojo for organising this championship yearly in honour of the late wife, Chief (Mrs) Elizabeth Wuraola Ojo to bring all golfers together. I wish him long life to continue doing what he’s doing here. It’s a wonderful competition. This is my fourth time in this tournament” .
In his submission, Ola Peters, professional golfer since 1979 and now playing as veteran pro. said, “ Wuraola Ojo golf tournament is a big tournament in the country so far, it’s a tournament every golfer looks forward to playing every year and this golf course is one of the best golf courses in Nigeria. If we can have two or three of this type of course in Nigeria , I believe we can challenge Tiger Woods or any known golfer anywhere in the world.
This year’s tournament is quite different from the previous editions because there is a lot of changes , the golf course is in beautiful shape. Any golfer who has not come to Smokin Hills Golf Course to play is missing a lot in this country”.
Douglas Appa , a professional golfer from Ikeja Golf Club and has been playing golf for the past 57 years said, “Elizabeth Wuraola is a very significant tournament in the golfing calendar of this country for professionals and amateurs . We love coming here every year for this tournament. This is a tournament every golfer in the country looks forward to coming to play in , the turn out is very overwhelming. So it’s a very popular tournament and we love to come here every year by the grace of God. Any golfer who has not played on this golf course should endeavour to come and play here and once any golfer plays here will surely come back to play here again definitely.”
