Former Nigeria Captain, Joseph Yobo, yesterday commended the Super Eagles for going to Yaounde to record a 1-1 draw against the reigning African champions, the Indomitable Lions in the World Cup 2018 qualifier played on Monday.

The ex international who capped 102 times for the senior national team, said yesterday in Lagos that the feat needed to be celebrated because it is not easy going to Yaounde to pick a point off the Cameroonians.

“This is a very commendable feat. It is always very difficult to go to Yaounde to get a point. It is even more difficult when the Indomitable Lions know that the opposition is Nigeria they see as rivals in the continent,” recalled Yobo who led Eagles to win AFCON 2013 in South Africa

He insisted that beating Cameroon in the first leg of the double header Russia 2018 qualifier in Uyo last Friday means that Nigeria is on the march again to claiming greatness in global soccer.

“Beating Cameroon in Uyo was a massive feat by this generation of Super Eagles. It shows that we are moving back to the top of African football once more. We have not recorded this kind of good run in a World Cup qualifier in a long while that I can recall,” observed Yobo who represented the Super Eagles at three FIFA World Cups and six Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.

The Rivers State-born former centre back who is a year older today, called on the team to remain focused and proactive now that Nigeria is as good as grabbing the Group B ticket to Russia 2018.

“Now that the youthful team has been able to go this far in the qualifiers, we just need to remain focused and conclude the run with another win or draw at worse against Zambia in our next game on October 7 in Uyo,” observed Yobo who made his senior international debut against Zambia in a 2002 FIFA World Cup qualifier on 24 March, 2001.

He attributed the four points Nigeria picked from the six at stake in the two games with Cameroon to the inclusion of more experienced players in the squad that played the Lions.

“The experienced players in the team made the difference in the Super Eagles. You cannot discountenance the importance of experience when the chips are down. Nigerians saw the difference from the squad that lost the AFCON 2019 qualifier to South Africa. We need a mix of the best for us to do well and not just add up the number at the World Cup,” advised the ex international whose last game for Nigeria was at the Round of 16 Brazil 2014 World Cup clash with France in Brasilia.

Nigeria with 10 points from four games is leading the Group B of the Russia 2018 World Cup qualifiers. Zambia who played Algeria last night in Blide is second on four points with Cameroon third on three points. Algeria is at the rear on just one point.
