The exercise , according to the governor’s spokesman, Malam Isa Gusau, was the first batch of an enrolment drive of the state government for an estimated 7,000 school-age children.

“The children, aged between six and 13 years, were enrolled into primary and junior secondary schools, depending on their academic statuses before they were displaced by insurgents from their communities,” he explained in a statement on Monday.

He said the children enrolled were from four local governments of Monguno, Kukawa, Guzamala and Marte.

The governor applauded parents and guardians for the large turnout to present their children and wards for the mass enrollment.

Scores of families with their children fled their homes in the four local governments and other oarts of Borno amid repeated attacks on their communities and schools by Boko Haram between 2014 and 2017.

About 800,000 children have been affected by the violence with several others forced to abandon schools.

Several civilians that fled the four local governments have been taking refuge at Monguno, some 137 kilometres to Maiduguri.
