Former member of the House of Representatives Mrs Doris Uboh has said the recent feats of Nigerian women in sports deserve to be celebrated.

Uboh, who had previously represented Ika Federal Constituency, and is the APC candidate for the seat in next year’s general election, said the exploits of Nigerian female athletes in diverse areas of sports in recent times are amazing.

She hailed Asisat Oshoala for winning the CAF Female Player of the Year Award for a record 5th time, becoming the only player on the continent that has won the award in both male and female categories.

Uboh also congratulated Tobi Amusan and Ese Brume, who won gold in 100-meter hurdles and silver in long jump, respectively, in the World Athletics Championship in the US state of Oregon.

Uboh, a New York-trained Electrical Engineer, also paid tribute to the Super Falcons and 4×100 relay quartet for their noble feats at their respective competitions.

“The quartet of Joy Udo-Gabriel, Favour Ofili, Rosemary Chukwuma and Grace Nwokocha deserve commendation for clocking 42.22 seconds in the final, to break the 30-year-old African record.

“Similarly, the Super Falcons must also be celebrated for their fourth-place finish at the just concluded AWFCON in Morocco, wherein amongst other things, they generated financial returns for the country and qualified for the Women’s World Cup later this year,” she said.

Uboh promised to develop the sporting capacities of women and young girls and youths, beginning from her constituency, if elected.

“Priority must now be given to developing the innate abilities of youths and girl-child in the area of sports.

“Sports development is a part of the new possibilities being envisaged for Ika Federal Constituency under my representation,” she affirmed.
